PhD Fellowship for molecular studies on Plasmodium vivax host parasite interactions mediated by exosomes: PVREX group, ISGlobal, Barcelona Institute for Global Health, Spain

The Plasmodium vivax and exosome research group (PVREX) (http://pvrex.com) is seeking for a self-motivated and enthusiastic student to pursue a 3-years PhD position on mechanistic insights of pathology mediated by exosomes in the human malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax. Exosomes are nanovesicles of endocytic origins initially identified in reticulocytes, the host cell for which Plasmodium vivax has a unique tropism, and presently known to act in inter-cellular communication and holding a promising potential as novel biomarkers of disease and vaccines.

The research is hypothesis driven and goals include unveiling in vivo distribution of exosomes in infections, identification of target human cells, OMICs analysis to unveil signaling pathways and development of functional assays and usage of rodent models to show their role in pathology. This project will be done in collaboration with Marcus VG Lacerda´s group at the Fundaçao de Medicina Tropical Dr Heitor Vieira Dourado, Manaus, Brazil. Thus, the position will require close collaboration with this Foundation and a willingness to spend time working there.

Candidates with a combination of skills are sought, including disciplines such as biology and computational biology. Applicants should possess strong scientific skills, an affinity for hypothesis development and testing in a collaborative research environment, and a drive to learn new skills.  Excellent written and oral English including presentation and reporting skills as well as the ability to work independently and as a team player, are essential. A master in biological sciences is required.

Applicants should apply by sending a cover letter, CV, personal statement noting career goals, and the names and contacts of three references to either Dr. Hernando Del Portillo (hernandoa.delportillo@isglobal.org) or Dr. Carmen Fernandez-Becerra (Carmen.fernandez@isglobal.org) with "PhD Fellowship Application' in the subject line of the message. The application should include information on the suitability of the applicant for the open position and stress the specific talents they will bring to this program.

Selected candidates will be interviewed personally or by skype.

This position is available for 3 years.
